August at Sean’s Place

August at Sean’s Place was filled with new experiences, shared memories, and plenty of sunshine (well… most of the time!).

Alongside these special events, our regular summer sessions remained a highlight. From the angling club to the walking and cycling groups, members continued to develop new skills, boost their wellbeing, and build lasting friendships.

Working with partners and friends

Over the past five years, as Sean’s Place has grown, so too has our incredible network of friends, supporters, and partners. Each one plays a vital role in helping us champion mental health awareness and support. Some provide invaluable financial contributions that allow us to continue our work, while others create meaningful opportunities for our members to try new things, build lasting memories, and overcome social isolation.

This August, our friends at LFC Red Neighbours and the LFC Foundation invited more than 40 of our members to experience a guided tour of Anfield Stadium. For some, it was their very first visit to the iconic stadium and museum—an unforgettable moment filled with excitement, pride, and connection. The warm welcome from everyone at the club made the day truly special, and we cannot thank them enough for their generosity and continued support.

Bootle Canoe Club

Another of our fantastic supporters is the team at Bootle Canoe Club CIC, who work tirelessly throughout the year to care for and maintain our local waterways, ensuring they remain safe and accessible for everyone in the community. This summer, they generously invited some of our members to enjoy a beautiful evening kayaking along the Liverpool–Leeds Canal.

It was a truly unique and peaceful way to experience our local area, offering not just relaxation but also the chance to build new skills and confidence in the great outdoors. For many, the evening sparked a renewed enthusiasm for exploring nature and enjoying the benefits that time outside can bring for both mental and physical wellbeing.

We are so grateful to Bootle Canoe Club CIC for their kindness and support, and we’re already looking forward to more adventures together in the spring.

Members sessions at Sean’s Place

Throughout August, alongside our days out, our members also enjoyed the wide variety of regular sessions that make Sean’s Place such a welcoming community. From Coffee and Connect gatherings to our Speakeasy peer support group, Muay Thai and fitness classes, chess club, movie nights, and quiz nights—there has been no shortage of opportunities to relax, socialise, and support one another.

As the seasons change, we’ve also started planning ahead for the winter months, when getting out and about isn’t always as easy. We want to make sure our members still have plenty of activities and skills they can enjoy from home. With that in mind, we were thrilled to launch a brand-new six-week cookery programme. The sessions are designed to equip members with simple yet delicious recipes, build confidence in the kitchen, and spark creativity with food.

Even better, many of the ingredients come straight from our very own garden! Earlier this year, thanks to generous funding from Burbo Bank, we transformed our outdoor space into a kitchen garden, and it has been wonderful to now harvest fresh vegetables and herbs to use in our classes. Each week, the room fills with the smells of homegrown produce being turned into tasty dishes, and we can’t wait to see what hearty winter warmers our members create as the year goes on.

One member told us, “I’ve never cooked with fresh herbs before—having fresh rather than out of the jat made the taste so special.” Another added, “I usually eat the same things every week, but these classes have given me the confidence to try something new.”

Hearing feedback like this reminds us why these sessions matter so much—they’re not just about food, but about confidence, independence, and creating positive experiences to carry through the winter months and beyond.

Huge Thanks!!

We always consider our service so lucky to have so many people out there in our local communities who choose to support Sean’s Place. These amazing fundraisers often come our way because they or someone they know has been affected by mental health and sadly, sometimes they have lost someone they love. We always feel so in awe of these people who go out of their way to change other people’s lives for the better and once again August brought some amazing fundraisers our way.

One of this month’s fundraisers was the incredible ‘Man V Fat’ from just down the road in St.Helens. These amazing guys organised a 24 hour football match raising over $6,700 for Sean’s Place. It was very emotional as the game drew to a close after a really gruelling 24 hours of non stop sports, but everyone who took part looked so proud as the final whistle blew. Thank you to you all…you truly are incredible!!

Coast to Coast

Another amazing fundraiser was held for Sean’s Place in August by our lovely friends Chris and Craig who bravely walked from Scarborough to Liverpool in memory of their loved ones and to raise awareness of the devastating impact of suicide. Throughout their gruelling trip, they met so many people who supported their cause and message, some of whom, had heartbreaking stories to share, but these spurred Chris and Craig on to continue to share their message. On the last stint of their journey, they stopped at Sean’s Place and were greeted by a huge round of applause from our team and some of our members in what was a truly emotional moment. Thank you for your support Chris and Craig and we are so glad you’re both fighting fit after such an epic challenge!!

As well as all of these special moments for our members, throughout the month of August we have continued to offer 1:1 counselling support as well as therapeutic groups, to ensure we are giving our members a well rounded package of care.

As always we extend our thanks to not just our supporters and partners but also to our members who trust us to be part of their journey….thank you all.
