June was a fantastic month at Sean’s Place as we celebrated Men’s Health Week and the start of the World Cup, making full use of our new air conditioning during the warmer weather! Alongside our regular social, fitness and creative sessions, members enjoyed mystery tours, championship boxing, FIFA tournaments and plenty of opportunities to connect, have fun and support one another.
Over 60’s Club Mystery Tour
Our Over 60s Club kicked off the month with a fantastic Mystery Tour around Liverpool city centre. Members worked together to solve clues while enjoying plenty of laughter along the way. It was a brilliant day for everyone involved, including our team!
Bootle Canoe Club
Ten of our members teamed up with Bootle Canoe Club to help clean up our local canal by kayak. As well as having a great time on the water, the group collected a huge amount of litter, helping to make our local waterways cleaner and healthier for everyone.
FCC Lightweight Championship Trip
Sixteen of our members travelled to Bolton to support our incredible ambassador, Liam McCracken, as he competed for the FCC Lightweight Championship. We couldn’t be prouder as Liam brought home the championship belt. His journey continues to inspire so many people, and we are honoured to have him as part of the Sean’s Place family. Congratulations, Liam!
Drama Club
Our Sean’s Place Drama Group received a surprise visit from ambassador Terri Dwyer, who offered invaluable advice and encouragement as members began casting for their very first performance later this year. Thank you, Terri, for sharing your time and experience—we can’t wait to welcome you back.
Our Drama Club is about far more than acting. It provides a safe space where members can build confidence, express themselves, develop new skills and simply enjoy being themselves. We are incredibly proud of everything they continue to achieve.
British Psychological Society Conference
Behind the scenes, our founder Debbie and Head of Counselling, Jo, had the privilege of presenting at the British Psychological Society Male Psychology Section Conference in London. They shared a paper exploring the partnership between Sean’s Place and Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust, highlighting how community organisations and NHS services can work together to improve outcomes for men experiencing mental health difficulties and suicidal crisis.
Being invited to present alongside leading psychologists, researchers and practitioners from across the country was a tremendous honour. What began as Debbie’s vision following the loss of her brother Sean has grown into an organisation helping to shape national conversations around suicide prevention and men’s mental health.
The response from delegates was overwhelmingly positive, with many keen to learn more about our model and how similar approaches could be developed elsewhere in the UK. This recognition belongs to every member, volunteer, staff member, supporter and partner who has helped build Sean’s Place. It reinforces the importance of compassionate, accessible community support and the life-changing impact of organisations working together.
Men’s Health Week
At Sean’s Place, we know that mental and physical wellbeing go hand in hand, so we marked Men’s Health Week with a range of activities designed to encourage members to take positive steps towards better health. Our partners at Active Sefton joined us to carry out health checks, helping members gain a better understanding of their physical wellbeing. We also held a First Steps to Fitness session, offering a supportive and welcoming environment for members to build confidence, get active and feel good.
World Cup Celebrations
To celebrate England’s opening match, members competed in our first-ever Sean’s Place FIFA World Cup tournament before coming together later that evening to watch the game at our World Cup party. A huge thank you to Tony, Brandon and all of our volunteers for working so hard to make these events happen, and to Matt from Red Neighbours for providing fantastic prizes and pizza for everyone to enjoy.
The Lock and Quay Community Festival
We were incredibly proud to see our members perform at the Lock and Quay Community Festival. Our long-established band, The Originals, took to the stage alongside our newest group, One Too Many, who have only recently formed. Whether they’ve been performing together for years or just a few months, stepping onto a stage takes courage, and every one of them should be immensely proud of what they achieved. Watching our members grow in confidence and support one another is what Sean’s Place is all about, and this performance was another wonderful reminder of the power of community.
Fitness and Grappling Class
Finally, on the last evening of June we welcomed back Mark Scanlon who led a session and introduced our members to the art of Luta Livre. Well done to all our members who got stuck in and gave 100% on the mats as always!
